MAURICE BARRATT

Parables of the Kingdom

Jesus spoke many things in the way of parables and when the disciples asked him why he does so, his response may well surprise you. It was to conceal the truth about the Kingdom from the majority of God's people whose hearts were hard (Matthew 13:11,15).  Unfortunately, human nature hasn't changed in 2,000 years and so the truths of the Kingdom are still hidden from the majority of God's people who only follow him for their own interests (John 6:2, 26) Jesus was and is always after disciples not followers, those who are hungry for truth even when it is unpalatable and not in their favour. In this highly valuable series, Maurice examines each of Jesus' hard sayings. Cross-referencing them with other scriptures in the old and new testament, he highlights biblical patterns and the true meanings of Jesus' words.

Talk 1: The Sower

In the first study of this new series, Maurice imparts vital information to us by elaborating on the parable of the sower, revealing that the symbolism is consistent throughout the rest of Jesus' teaching. He also explains valuable principles of the kingdom, which are of tremendous importance if one wishes to understand fully its parables.

Talk 2: The Tares

In this study, Maurice reads Jesus second parable in Matthew 13 about the tares of the field. A vital study, as it contains keys to the other parables, Maurice explains and elaborates on the symbolism Jesus very clearly states to his disciples - those who have ears to hear.

Talk 4: The Leaven

In the fourth study of this series, Maurice speaks on the parable of the three measures of meal, in which a woman 'hid' leaven. He explains that the leaven, as it was originally 'sour dough', speaks of rottenness and corruption in the church. The kingdom of heaven has become defiled with false teaching and immorality, and Maurice exposes this with scripture and logic in this straight-talking study.

Talk 5: The Treasure Hid in a Field

In talk 5, Maurice explains every detail of the parable of the hidden treasure in the field. He explains that though God has bought the world - the field - God's value is for the treasure within the field: his peculiar people, which now is hidden, but will be revealed at the coming of Christ.

Talk 6: The Pearl of Great Price

In this sobering study, Maurice begins by explaining the symbolism of this parable. How the pearl of great price is the kingdom, which we sell all to buy. He then explains illustrations, exhortations, and practical applications from the Bible; of the sacrifice we must make and the price we must pay to become the bride and reign with Christ in his kingdom.

Talk 7: The Net Cast into the Sea

For the last talk of this series, Maurice speaks on the parable of the net cast into the sea, and the fishes divided after the catch. He explains, using scriptures, that this parable again speaks about those within the kingdom, and not the world; thus meaning that the dividing between the wicked and the just is the dividing between the Christians who have lived justly and those who have been wicked and slothful, at the judgment seat of Christ.

Talk 8: New Cloth in Old Garments

Maurice believes there are many little one-liners Jesus mentioned during his ministry which many Christians would not list as parables. In this study, Maurice talks about a few words Jesus mentioned: "You cannot put new cloth in an old garment." Viewing the context and scriptures linked to this saying, Maurice argues that this analogy is to do with the two covenants God has made with his people. You cannot have the new unless you're finished with the old! Don't try and patch it up.

Talk 9: New Wine in New Wineskins

Though Jesus' words about new wine and new wineskins sounds like a different way to speak about new cloth in new garments, Maurice reveals through the symbolism itself that Jesus was talking about something else. Maurice explains that Jesus was referring to the Holy Ghost, and how to make ourselves 'new wineskins' in order to accept the new wine without bursting.

Talk 10: Wisdom is Justified of Her Children

Wisdom is like love. It does what it needs to do and cannot be justified except on hindsight. God never has to justify his actions and neither do we – that is, providing we are doing it in the will of God. John the Baptist did the opposite of what Jesus did and yet they were both correct. Maurice explains how we reconcile this dilemma from the scriptures.

Talk 11: My Yoke is Easy, My Burden is Light

Most would not expect Jesus' statement, "My yoke is easy and my burden is light", to be a parable; yet Maurice proves, by the very fact that it is a contradiction, that it has hidden depth. He reveals that Jesus is talking about meekness, of submitting to the pressure rather than resisting it. By our attitude a heavy burden can become light.

Talk 12: Mercy - Not Sacrifice

Although it isn't a parable, Maurice nevertheless examines another of Jesus' sayings which isn't exactly straightforward: "I will have mercy, and not sacrifice". Examining the context, Maurice arrives at the conclusion that this saying is about legalism, of how our Pharisaical do's and don't's block out the mercy which is at the foreground of God's attitude and character.

Talk 13: The Sign of Jonah

Many Christians have mistaken Jesus' reference to Jonah being in the whale's belly, as a type and shadow of his death and resurrection. Maurice though, shows that this is false, and reveals that consistently throughout the Bible, Jesus is said to have risen 'on the third day', as opposed to the fourth, if he would have been in the grave three days and three nights. Maurice also explains the true meaning of this analogy, bringing to light a very challenging and applicable principle.

Talk 14: Who is My Mother and Who are My Brethren?

Maurice talks this time about Jesus' casual reply when notified that his family was waiting for him outside. A famous English proverb states that 'blood is thicker than water', but Maurice shows that 'spirit is thicker than blood', and that when God calls us, our family should not hold us back. Moreover, our true spiritual family is the brotherhood of those who do the will of God, and Maurice speaks of ways to ensure that we are in God's will.

Talk 15: What Defiles a Man?

In this sober and very challenging study, Maurice speaks on Jesus' words about 'what defiles a man', showing that as with the physical, so with the spiritual: rubbish in - rubbish out. The body can cope with a small amount of poison, but an overload will kill it. We must be careful what we take into our spiritual system, and acknowledge that our spiritual bowel movement (which Maurice explains) will expose our hearts.

Talk 16: Children's Meat to the Dogs

Maurice speaks on Jesus' response to the Syro-Phoenician woman's request to heal her demon-possessed daughter; of how he turned her away because she was outside Israel, how she countered Jesus' argument with his own illustration, and how by faith she got what she wanted - even though her predestination had her at a disadvantage. This is a valuable study in many respects as Maurice includes a few different subjects in regard to this story.

Talk 18: Bound on Earth - Bound in Heaven

In this study, Maurice examines the passage many refer to when 'binding demons', but reveals quite plainly that Jesus was talking about something quite different - forgiveness. The sins against us that we bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and the trespassers will not give account for them. He also explains the principle of 'precept and practice' - of how we should compare Jesus' words to the practices of the apostles after his ascension.

Talk 19: Seventy Times Seven

In this convicting study, Maurice expounds Jesus' words from Matthew 18 about forgiveness. Talk 20: The First shall be Last

Talk 31: Mystery of the Seed

In this parable Jesus shows that fruitfulness is a mystery.  The rain and sun are not in the hands of the farmer, and neither are we in control in the spiritual realm. We can only sow seeds, the harvest is conditional on outside influences and this is the mystery Jesus talks about. Maurice looks at this process in a logical way and encourages us 'not to be weary in well doing' as the Lord of the harvest is watching us, and 'we shall reap if we faint not'.

Talk 32: Traditions of Men

Jesus was strongly against the traditions of the Elders in his time on earth, and he exposed them for the disciples to be aware of. Unfortunately, Maurice shows us that it is the same today and the traditions of our denominations often take precedence over the word of God. He looks at, and exposes, some of the modern traditions that are not biblical today.

Talk 33: Save Your Life - or Lose it

The contradictions of Jesus are many and this is another hard saying. How can we gain by losing, and how can I give up my own rights and preferences to gain his life? Maurice shows us that it takes great faith in God to lose what you want and feel you need to gain the kingdom – but shows us that the price is well worth it.

Talk 34: Elijah Will Restore All Things

The Church are singing ' These are the day of Elijah', but what does this really mean for us? Although John the Baptist told Israel to prepare the way for Jesus' first coming, they were not ready, and did not recognise him. Maurice shows us that it will happen exactly the same with Jesus' second coming. Most of God's people will not be ready although the voices in the wilderness are starting to cry out today.

Talk 35: The Divine Contradiction

God's ways are the opposite to man's and Maurice shows that so many of Jesus' statements reflect this. He said 'the one who desires to be the first shall be the last and servant of all'. This goes against all out Western thinking, but Maurice shows that there is no other way to obtain the kingdom than to accept and live in these principles.

Talk 36: Riches and The Kingdom

Jesus said that it is impossible to obtain the kingdom if you are rich. How can this be? Maurice shows us that unless we have treasure in heaven there will be no kingdom for us. Talk 37: House of Prayer - Den of Thieves

Jesus cast the religious out of the temple before he went to the cross and said that they had made it a den of thieves. What is the modern equivalent of the temple as it was destroyed? Talk 38: Man Shall Not Live By Bread Alone

The fist temptation that the devil brought to Jesus was to turn stone into bread. Why did the devil choose this temptation when it would not have been a sin? Maurice shows us the answer is simple. He wanted to see if Jesus would recognise his voice from God's when told to do a good thing.

Talk 39: Do Not Tempt God

Talk 40: Worship Only God

Talk 41: How Is It That You Have No Faith?

Talk 43: Doing God's Will

This is one of the hardest sayings in the whole bible because it confirms that it is possible to be doing God's work and not be doing God's will. Many will say at the judgment seat of Christ that they have done God's work, but how many of us will have done his will?

Talk 44: Render To Caesar

Maurice shows that all authority is ordained of God and so we must obey it unless it goes against God's commandments. This means we should pay our taxes cheerfully and obey the speeding rules for the road if we want to be true disciples of Christ. This is a very challenging study for it affects the way we live and think in a modern world.

Talk 45: Fruitfulness

It is clear from scripture that God demands fruitfulness and is angry when no fruit is produced. Many of the parables reflect this and the saying in John about death and corruption bringing fruitfulness is a very hard saying indeed, but needs to be understood by today's followers of Jesus. Maurice makes it very clear in this study.

Talk 49: Beware Of Covetousness

Jesus told his disciples that he had not come to bring peace on the earth but division. What a strange thing to say when the angels who announced his birth to the shepherds said 'Peace on earth, Goodwill to Men'. Maurice unfolds this statement in an intriguing study.

Talk 53: Take The Lowest Seat

Talk 54: Lost Sheep - Lost Coin

These are another 2 parables that Jesus told against the hypocrisy and religious spirit of the Pharisees. Talk 59: The Day the Son of Man is Revealed

Talk 60: The Widow and the Judge

Talk 62: You Must Be Born Again

All Christians know this scripture but very few have revelation on it. Maurice shows that Jesus is not talking about salvation but about being born with a spiritual body at the first resurrection. Talk 63: My Hour is Not Yet Come

Talk 65: Seeking Honour
